How Much RAM Do You Need for a Minecraft Server in 2026?

RAM needed for a Minecraft server? Vanilla, Paper, modded and modpacks — how many GB you actually need, and how to get it for free with Raven Host.

How much RAM does a Minecraft server really need? It depends on the server type — here's the honest guide.

Vanilla: 1–2 GB is enough for a small world with a handful of players.

Paper/Spigot (plugins): 2–4 GB — plugins and more players push it up. Paper also runs more efficiently than Vanilla at the same RAM.

Fabric/Forge (mods): 3–6 GB for a modest modpack. Heavy modpacks can want more, but for typical play 4 GB is a comfortable sweet spot.

A good rule: 2.5–4 GB covers most small-to-medium servers. The biggest bottleneck is usually CPU and world load, not just RAM.

Raven Host's free Minecraft tier gives you 3 GB RAM with 200% CPU and 10 GB storage — plenty for a Vanilla or Paper server with friends. When you need more for a big modpack, a paid game plan scales you up.

Start at the free tier, and don't over-provision — RAM you don't use is RAM wasted.
